#5 - Der Rathskeller, Roast, The City Bar

After having to cancel June's meeting of the Madison Tavern Project due to the busy schedules of the participants we were back in the saddle for July.  Unfortunately the much anticipated summer visit to the Wisconsin Union coincided with a rainy night.  With popcorn the only thing on the menu and two people still needing dinner we only wound up staying long enough for a pitcher of Two Hearted and to hear a hipster warm up on his dulcimer.

Pro Tip: It is better to go to the Union when it isn't raining.
So next we headed off to a new place on State called Roast.  It took over the old BW3 space and is a giant improvement.  I can't argue with a place that decorates with NOAA maps, since I've got one over my fireplace as well.  Unfortunately for the guys who just opened the place, their building in on the chopping block for the monstrous new development that is also planned to take out Buraka, Husnus and Kabul.  The food was good, as was the beer and Phish show they were playing, but the basement zone with ping pong was closed, and since we had to decide the next rotation we headed out into the night in search of games.

First we stopped at the Whiskey River Saloon, in the space where the Pub used to be.  Despite the Willie Nelson themed name, the place was a disappointment and smelled like a giant urinal cake.  We walked a few doors down to the City Bar.  I've been there a couple times before, and it's always better than you think it is going to be... kind of reminds me of Rick's in Ann Arbor though, which... well...  Anyway, they had darts and the rotation for the next four months was set:
  • August - Idaho
  • September - Delaware
  • October - Montana
  • November - New Mexico
A new bylaw proposing a ban on darts as the means for selecting future rotations was tabled after it failed to win a majority.
